Missionsschule
Neben den alten Sprachen Hebräisch, Griechisch und Latein wurde besonderer Wert auf das Erlernen der englischen Sprache gelegt.
Der Kriegsdienst unterbrach die Ausbildung.
Abgang wegen Einberufung zum Heeresdienst
Diese erste Prüfung konnte er infolge der Einberufung zur Wehrmacht nicht mehr ablegen. Sie wurde ihm jedoch durch Komiteebeschluss vom 1.4.1941 zuerkannt, in dem er zugleich unter die Zahl der Missionskandidaten der Berliner Mission aufgenommen wurde.

Auf Weisung des Komitees der Berliner Missionsgesellschaft und unter Zustimmung des Evangelischen Konsistoriums Berlin-Brandenburg haben wir, die unterzeichneten Pastoren, dem Missionskandidaten Otto Plath auf das ihm abgelegte Gelübde treuer Verwaltung des ihm von dem Herrn befohlenen Amtes eines Missionars unter Auflegung der Hände die kirchlich Ordination erteilt und ihn damit zum Dienst der Verkündung verordnet.
Über diese an dem heutigen Tage in der Marienkirche zu Berlin vollzogene Handlung stellen wir ihm dieses Zeugnis zu seiner Beglaubigung aus und verbinden damit die brüderliche Mahnung, er wolle dieser Stunden und dieses Gelübdes und Segens alle Zeit in Treue eingedenk bleiben. Der allmächtige Gott verleihe ihm dazu um Jesu Christi Willen den Beistand seines Heiligen Geistes in Gnaden.
Er erhält neben freier Wohnung im Pfarrhaus monatlich 270,- RM (250,- RM zzgl. 20 RM Kinderzuschlag) aus der Pfarrkasse in Neulingen.
Evangelisches Konsistorium der Kirchenprovinz Sachsen J. Nr. III. 618
Wir setzen hiermit Ihr monatl. Diensteinkommen mit Wirkung vom 1.4.1948 auf mtl. 300,- RM fest unter der Voraussetzung, daß hinreichende örtliche Mittel vorhanden sind. Der Kinderzuschlag für Ihren Neffen (Pflegekind) Heinrich Plath, geb. 12.10.1935, wird Ihnen ab 1.5.1948 bis auf weiteres zuerkannt.
Sie erhalten somit monatlich 300,- RM hinzu 3 Kinderzuschläge = RM 360,- insgesamt.
Unter Berücksichtigung der geschilderten finanziellen Notstände, stellen wir Ihnen anheim, uns ein begründetes Beihilfegesuch einzureichen.
Berufung zum Pfarrer in der Kirchenprovinz Sachsen
Der Rat unserer Kirchenleitung hat über die Frage Ihrer Freigabe für den Dienst in evangelischen Gemeinden in Brasilien sowohl am 25. Juni, wie am 5. Juli 1951 verhandelt. Bei voller Würdigung des Anliegens der Berliner Missionsgesellschaft, welches im übrigen Herr Missionsdirektor a. D. D. Knak uns auch mündlich vorgetragen hat, hat der Rat der Kirchenleitung angesichts des drückenden Pfarrermangels in unserer Kirchenprovinz sich zu einer bedingungslosen Freigabe nicht entschliessen können. Eine Freigabe für den geplanten Dienst kann nur dann erwogen werden, wenn die Berliner Missionsgesellschaft für Sie einen gleichwertigen Ersatz zu stellen bereit wäre. Wir werden die Berliner Missionsgesellschaft in diesem Sinne verständigen und bitten Sie, in den Ihnen anvertrauten Gemeinden weiterhin mit Treue und Freudigkeit Ihren Dienst zu tun.
Der Staat als Patron der Stelle widersetzte sich jahrelang dieser Berufung.
Die Dienstbezüge setzen sich wie folgt zusammen:
Grundgehalt 516,67 DM
Ruhegehaltsfähige Schwierigkeitszulage 25,- DM
Kinderzuschlag (1 x 35,- DM und 3 x 30,- DM) 125,- DM

Hier geriet er mit den politischen Behörden in Auseinandersetzungen und musste bei Nacht und Nebel mit seinen vier Kindern fliehen. Im Notaufnahmeverfahren wurden staatlicherseits die Gründe anerkannt und der Familie der Flüchtlingsausweis zuerkannt. Aber kirchlicherseits verurteilte man ihn seitens der DDR-Kirchenbehörde zur Entfernung aus dem Dienst unter Belassung der Rechte des geistlichen Standes.
Durch Herrn Oberkirchenrat Stöver, der in Berlin Gelegenheit hatte mit Ihren früheren Behörden zu sprechen, erhielten wir einige Informationen über Ihre Angelegenheit. Wir haben dann diese noch einmal hier in unserem Kreise besprochen und möchten Sie nun bitten, zu einem vorläufigen Dienst zu uns zu kommen. Im Missionshaus wird man ein Zimmer für Sie frei machen. Es wäre uns lieb, wenn Sie Ihren Dienst baldmöglichst antreten könnten.
Der Pfarrer Otto Wilhelm Franz Plath, zuletzt Pfarrer in Halle St. Georgen, Kirchenkreis Halle-Stadt, geboren am 12. September 1916 in Rummelsburg/Pommern, verheiratet, zur Zeit in Wuppertal-Barmen, Rudolfstr. 37/39 wird beschuldigt, schuldhaft Pflichten verletzt zu haben, die sich aus seinem mit der Ordination begründeten Amtsverhältnis ergeben, indem er am 30.3.1958 seine Pfarrstelle und Kirchengemeinde in Halle St. Georgen ohne Urlaub und Freigabe, in der Absicht nicht wieder zurück zu kehren, verlassen hat.
Disziplinarkammer der Evangelischen Kirche der Kirchenprovinz Sachsen
Die Evangelische Kirche in Hessen und Nassau übernahm Pfarrer Plath und beauftragte ihn mit dem Religionsunterricht an der Leibniz-Schule in Offenbach am Main.
In dieser Stelle machte er Vertretungsdienste in vielen Gemeinden der Stadt und des damaligen Großdekanats Offenbach.
Monatliche Dienstbezüge: 798 DM
